Las Vegas may rank among America’s top vacation destinations, but a growing number of folks are doubling down and settling down in the breathtaking desert oasis. Although it’s known for its casinos, hotels and over-the-top entertainment, many singles, couples and families are realizing that Vegas is, in fact, an outdoor lover’s paradise that offers a whole lot more than poker chips along the legendary Strip.
Why are so many families planting roots in southwest Vegas? The reasons are countless. However, it’s a safe bet that the magnificent Mojave Desert backdrop—and the abundant recreational opportunities it provides—tops the list. Here are just a few popular outdoor activities among locals and visitors alike:
- Taking a hike. You probably aren’t surprised that hiking is a popular Vegas pastime. After all, the city boasts a postcard-perfect landscape and averages 310 days of sunshine a year. There are a number of incredible hiking spots in the area, but it doesn’t get much better than the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, which offers an extensive trail system. Hikers can choose from 19 distinct routes, surrounded by vivid red rock formations and thousands of native plant and animal species. There are a number of “easy” hikes that are perfect for beginners and families with small children, and guided tours are available.
- Making a splash. Located just outside Vegas, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area provides year-round opportunities for swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The enormous manmade lake even offers freshwater scuba diving! Looking for even greater thrills? Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas water park is a favorite among locals looking to beat the heat with a wave pool, lazy river, mild-to-wild water slides and even summer “Dive ‘n Movies.”
- Booking a tee time. Las Vegas is home to some of the world’s finest championship golf courses. Who wouldn’t want to play a round at Bali Hai, a stunning par-71 course recently ranked among the “Top 50 Resort Courses” by Golf Digest? Other area courses that draw both locals and visitors include Bear’s Best Golf Club, Desert Pines Golf Club and Stallion Mountain Golf Club.
- Hitting the slopes. When you think of Vegas, winter sports may not be top of mind, but from November to April, weather permitting, the surrounding area is bustling with sledders, skiers and snowboarders. Want to get in on the downhill action? Check out the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort, which offers lessons for ages three and up and season passes for local residents.
