Get organized for 2025 with a New Year’s decluttering checklist!

While offering a healthy dose of merriment, the holiday season can also take a toll on your lifestyle—especially when it comes to keeping your home clean and clutter-free. Now that the new year is upon us, what better time to get your living space tidied up and organized? Here are five items to consider adding to your 2025 decluttering checklist:

1. Purge, purge, purge ☑

Did the holidays make your home feel even more cluttered and disorganized than normal? Now that you’ve got the “in with the new” part down (e.g., all those gifts from friends, family and the man in red), it’s time to move on to the “out with the old” portion of the idiom. What you don’t throw away, consider donating to a local charity that accepts clothes, electronics, appliances and other items in good condition. You can also host a garage sale to kick off 2025 with some extra cash!

If you’re considering selling your home in the new year, getting rid of items that no longer serve you has an added bonus: it’s a great first step toward staging your home for a successful sale. Plus, it will mean less stuff to pack when the time comes to make a move!

2. Coordinate & consolidate ☑

Now that you’re putting away your holiday decorations and everything else you magically accumulated during the year, make sure your belongings are stored in the proper place and as efficiently as possible. If you have multiple bins with tree ornaments or art supplies, consolidate them into fewer containers and try to store them alongside other similarly themed boxes so you’re not scrambling to find what you’re looking for when you need it. Be sure to properly label everything as well. In the event you do make a move in 2025, this will make it much easier to unpack and organize your belongings in your next home.

3. Reconfigure & recalibrate ☑

Sometimes simply moving around your furniture can make a big difference in terms of how your home flows and functions. As you assess the various rooms in your home, consider ways to maximize and optimize your living space. You can also take this opportunity to think of new ways to decorate your home’s interior, potentially freshening and livening up the homestead for the new year. Having an organized, well-thought-out layout within your home will also make staging it for potential buyers easier as well.

4. Add more storage space ☑

If your basement and closets are already filled to the brim, you may want to consider adding overhang storage bins to your garage or augmenting your cabinet space. Adding a built-in bookcase to your home office or an extra shelving unit to your pantry can also go a long way toward alleviating your storage crunch. If your current home is simply no longer big enough to accommodate your needs, we can definitely help you out there!

5. Hire a professional ☑

It can be tough to find or make the time to tackle your decluttering checklist, so letting a pro take the reins is a viable option to consider. In addition to saving you time, an expert organizer can also pass along some valuable suggestions for how to keep your home organized moving forward—into 2025 and beyond. Sites like TaskRabbit and Thumbtack are a good place to start if you do decide to go with a professional, which might also give you some additional contacts to pursue when the times comes to put your house up for sale.

We hope that these decluttering checklist suggestions will help make your life easier as we head into the new year! Some additional home organization tips you might find helpful can be found here.
